Organic Food Product Range: Categories Explained

An archived product list from a south-west England organic supplier shows how wide the organic range had become. This page groups those items by type and offers brief notes on each group. It is a historical reference; nothing is for sale here.

Meat and meat products

The list named beef, bacon, chicken, lamb and pork, along with sausages, speciality sausages, burgers and cooked meats. It also mentioned selection packs, which combined different cuts for convenience. More background is in the organic meat page.

Fish

Two fish items were listed: organic trout and smoked salmon.

Vegetarian foods

Vegetarian choices included pies, tofu roasts, tofu burgers, plain tofu and a “specials” line. Together they show that organic shoppers were not only buying meat.

Dairy and eggs

Organic cheese, butter and eggs completed the dairy shelf.

Drinks

Organic wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks were part of the range, and cordials were mentioned on other pages.

Vegetable box scheme

A weekly delivery scheme for vegetables was listed as its own item. See the vegetable box page for a closer look.

How to use this list

For readers today, the categories work as a checklist of what an organic larder can include. The list also reminds us that “organic” applies to many food groups, each with its own rules about farming, feeding and processing. Return to the home page for an overview.
